Sailing from Bodrum to Marmaris

Gökova Gulf - Hisarönü Gulf

A yachting tour of the Gulf of Gokova starts in Bodrum. The translucent and deep waters of the Gulf on the southern shore of the Bodrum Peninsula vary from the darkest blue to the palest turquoise, and the coastline is thickly wooded with every hue of green. In the evening, the sea reflects the mountains silhouetted against the setting sun, while at night it shimmers with phosphorescence. Its islands, bays and shores are treasured jewels. Among them are:
One of the best anchorages is the splendidly scenic Akbük, hidden behind a forested promontory. The excellent cozy restaurants are as good a reason as any to linger for a tasty meal after an afternoon of snorkeling and diving. Sedir Island (ancient Cedrai) boasts an incredible beach with fine sand composed of fossils, and a splendid view of the Kiran mountains

across the bay.

As you sail along the island's southwestern coast, forests stretch out to meet the deep inlets of the bays. The jagged coastline, known as the Bay of Sixty-Six Inlets, seems to have emerged from the oft-told tales of pirates.

The waters of the Gulf of Hisaronu lap the breathtaking shores that hold the legacy of both ancient and modern civilizations. At the end of the Datca Peninsula stands the ancient Carian city of Knidos, described by Strabo as "a city that was built for the most beautiful of goddesses, Aphrodite, on the most beautiful of peninsulas." Famous as a center of art and culture in the fourth century B.C., the city had two harbors: one on the Aegean and the other on the Mediterranean. The remains of a circular temple dedicated to the goddess of love overlook remains of the two harbors; the arcaded way was built of white marble heart-shaped columns. The legendary Aphrodite of Praxiteles statue, reputedly one of the most beautiful sculptures of antiquity, once graced this temple.
The town of Datca has become a popular stopover for yachtsmen, and offers many colorful seafood restaurants, pubs and discotheques.
In the Gulf of Hisaronu is the peaceful Keci Biikii Bay; the Bay Marina is rich in natural beauty: the surrounding mountains and forests, and the long "Kizkumu" (sunken 'pier'), a natural sand formation. Leaving the Gulf of Hisaronu: hidden away in its own exclusive inlet is the town of Bozburun, famous as one of the gulet-buil-ding centers of Turkey. Loryma, at the tip of the Bozburun Peninsula where the ruins of the ancient harbor and castle remain, can only be reached by boat. Kumlubiik, a turquoise paradise, lies on the southern side of the bay; on the north side, above the water, stands the ancient Rhodian city of Amos. At Turunc a natural harbor opens out into a wide expanse of spectacular blue water. The next port is Marmaris.

-------------

GULF OF GOKOVA
The origins of the Blue Voyage lie in the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Gokova, the aptly named "Plains of the Sky".

COKERTME
This large bay on Gokova's northern coast is a favorite of cruising yachtsmen. Its wooded mountains provide shelter from the winds and its restaurants and bars are venues where tall sea stories are traded over good meals and refreshing drinks. It is also the place where water and provisions are replenished for further explorations of the gulf.

------------------------------------------------------------

CLEOPATRA'S ISLAND
Actually called Sedir or Sehir Island, it was known as Cedrae in antiquity and the remains of the ancient settlement are still much in evidence. Legend has it that the fine silver sand found on the beach was shipped here from Egypt by Cleopatra for her pleasures with her lover Mark Anthony. Believe it or not - but see it.

--------------------------------------------------------------

ENGLISH HARBOR
Though great swathes of its coasts have been ravaged by recent forest fires, English Harbor is still a desirable stopover on a Blue Voyage. The name stuck since the Second World War when British raiders had a base here for their operations against German-held nearby Greek islands. Attesting to its beauty is the fact that a former president of Turkey had a home built on the shore of the bay that encloses English Harbor.
The other lovely spots along the coasts of Gokova, such as Sogut, Seven Islands or Cati, we'll leave for the reader to discover on a Blue Voyage.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

CNIDUS
The southern shore of the Gulf of Gokova is bounded by the peninsula of Datca. On the western extremity of this peninsula is Cape Crio, dreaded by ancient mariners. Just near the tip is the harbor of Cnidus. The city, excavated and clearly visible on the hillside, but most of its sculptures are now in the British Museum sent there in several hundred cases by Sir Charles Newton in 1857-58. Cnidian amphorae, the shipping containers of old, can be found wherever ancient trading ships went, but the major claim to fame - on the naughty side - was its possession of the first fully nude statue of Aphrodite by the celebrated sculptor Praxiteles. It was a great tourist attraction of the age and the subject of exhaustive searches in modern times. It can also be suspected that such eminent Cnidians as Eudoxus the astronomer, mathematician, geographer and physician, appreciated the charms of Aphrodite disrobed.
